Adventures on the Gorge: Class VI Mountain River
Fall/Winter 2010

Adventures in the great outdoors are a popular way to combine harmony with nature and family harmony — particularly when some members of the family are in the midst of their turbulent teenage years. At Adventures on the Gorge in Lansing, West Virginia, a high-flying canopy tour gives new meaning to the term “family togetherness,” providing once-in-a-lifetime experiences sure to bring families closer.
Traversing the TreeTops course’s 10 ziplines and five Indiana Jones-style rope sky bridges, you’re bound to experience the adrenaline rush that owner Dave Arnold refers to as the “hee-haw factor.” But Adventure on the Gorge’s half-day canopy tour is more than just an amusement ride; it’s also an interpretive walk through the forest.
New in 2010, the company’s Bridge Walk Tour offers a similar double feature of eco-education and sensory thrills. On a harnessed catwalk trek across the second-largest single-span bridge in the world — 876 feet, to be exact — you’ll feel the excitement of elevation and witness the rapids of the rushing New River below.
Family raft trips are available from beginner to expert runs, and fall tours on the Gauley River, a world-class whitewater run, attract travelers from as far as California, Alaska and 20 different countries.
Recently, the company introduced an all-inclusive option, allowing visitors to stay, play and dine for a single price. Activity choices include Treetops Canopy, Bridge Walk and Whitewater Raft tours, and lodging options range from primitive campsites to four-bedroom luxury homes with hot tubs.
