Timeless Lessons
Heritage School at The Conservancy
Fall/Winter 2009

Go beyond passive observation and learn for yourself how things were done in days past. Butler County Community College’s Heritage School at The Conservancy in Butler, Pennsylvania, gives adult students ample opportunities to learn the how-tos of everything from blacksmithing to basket weaving to playing folk music. The school provides the ideal spot to unplug from all things electronic and focus on the task at hand.
Housed on the 50-acre grounds of the Succop Conservancy — and in buildings including the 180-year-old Marcraig House — the Heritage School features expert instructors who are passionate about their chosen crafts. But students at the Heritage School don’t just look through sepia-colored glasses; activities also focus on green topics and modern wellness. Sign on for an aromatherapy class to learn what’s inside all those little vials and jars in the health and home aisles of health food stores. Or find out how to make the most of from-the-farm ingredients in the “Buy Local, Eat Seasonal” course.
The school offers multi-day classes throughout the fall and one-day classes through the rest of the year. After you take just one, there’s a good chance you’ll spend weekdays perusing the course catalog to choose your next outing. Maybe you’ll even come to think of the school as your weekend home — after all, who wouldn’t want to take an immersion class in bagpiping or beer brewing?
