Occasionally, the romance in a relationship dries up with the summer heat.

But fall and winter presents lots of opportunities to cuddle up with a loved one. Dupont Mansion, an elegant B&B located in the Old Louisville Preservation District of Kentucky, features a distinctive architectural landscape that inspires couples to brave chilly weather just to see the sights.

Few activities are more romantic than walking hand-in-hand along the tree-lined streets of this area on a crisp day. Old Louisville is one of the largest Victorian neighborhoods in the country; with 48 blocks of historic homes in every conceivable style, it’s a bit like strolling through an outdoor museum. Indeed, these grand homes, once inhabited by the city’s most elite citizens, are like works of art. Travelers could spend an entire afternoon marveling at highlights like “The Pink Palace.” The former casino and gentleman’s club at the corner of St. James and Belgravia courts received its nickname in the 1920s when the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union purchased it and painted it pink.

Dupont Mansion, a striking example of Italianate-Renaissance Revival design, is also among the area’s noteworthy structures. Inside, whimsical murals brighten the parlor, and the library’s historic books and fine antiques recall the B&B’s 19th-century roots. Dupont’s eight guest rooms include the Andrew Carnegie Suite, with amenities such as a fireplace with a carved-wood mantle and a whirlpool made for two. For an added touch of romance, couples can request the B&B’s Louisville Romantic Getaway package, a special that features in-suite massages, a gift certificate to a nearby restaurant, and turndown service with rose petals, chilled champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries.
