Wheeling Island was named Wheeling Downs when it was built in 1937, but a fire in 1962 closed the facility for five years. Later known as Wheeling Island Racetrack and Gaming Center, the complex was renamed Wheeling Island Hotel, Casino and Racetrack in 2008 to reflect all its amenities.
