Dickens of a Christmas
Fall/Winter 2009
Nothing defines a Victorian Christmas like the aroma of roasting chestnuts and the beckoning strains of “Deck the Halls” sung by carolers in hoop skirts and top hats on the village square.

And no person evokes a Victorian Christmas better than Charles Dickens.

Ohio Village in Columbus, set in the 1860s, is the perfect backdrop for Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, and during Dickens of a Christmas, couples can step right into the spell.

In the village December 11–12, 18–19 and 20, you might meet The Ghost of Christmas Present on your way to hand-tint Christmas cards in the Newspaper Office or decorate springerle cookies at the Toy Shop. Stop by the Lodging House to admire the Prince Albert Christmas tree or listen to Dickens’ “The Goblin Who Stole a Sexton” in the church.

After a day of activity, relax with your partner over roasted pork and apple tart at the Dickens of a Dinner, held December 11–12 and 18–19 in the village’s American House Hotel. Dickens will pop in, and the Ohio Village Singers will perform.

Can’t make it for dinner? There’s still time to savor quiche, fruit and Victorian figgy pudding at the Christmas Brunch in the village, December 20. Make decorations for your tree together and play parlor games just as Scrooge’s nephew Fred and his new bride did with their guests.

If you’re still intrigued by Dickens and wonder how Scrooge fared after his Christmas transformation, help solve the twists and turns of a “Dickens of a Mystery” on December 17. Hint: There will be an empty seat, and it’s not Tiny Tim’s.
