Kid-friendly is the tag that fits Blue Mountain ski area in Palmerton, Pennsylvania, like a mitten. This winter-sports mecca recently refurbished its popular tubing park and added an extra lift and more runs, bringing the total to 19 runs.

The Ski Explorers, a children’s program, not only teaches little guys and gals the finer points of navigating down a mountain, it also details the importance of safety on the slopes. Watch out for Snowball, the Snow Tiger — the Blue Mountain mascot — who loves to mix it up with kids.

Parents will enjoy Blue Mountain’s variety: The 156 skiable acres includes 33 slopes, offering challenges for all abilities; three of the trails are approximately one mile in length. Other attractions include a 300-foot half-pipe and four terrain parks. Skiers can make frequent top-to-bottom laps thanks to high-speed four- and six-passenger chairlifts.

While the kids are in ski school, expert parents should check out the exhilarating Razor’s Edge, a 3,000-foot double-black-diamond trail.

Dining options near Blue Mountain will appeal to the whole family. Kids will love the grub and parents will appreciate the child-friendly atmosphere at the charming Covered Bridge Inn, located just across from the entrance to the ski area. You can’t beat the wings and variety of homemade soups, which hit the spot after spending a chilly day mastering the slopes. If your brood has a hankering for seafood or steaks, check out the Blue Mountain Pub, which offers tasty and hearty fare.
