Red-Hot Retreat

FireKeepers Casino

Red-Hot Retreat
Midwest Gaming & Travel magazine readers credit Battle Creek’s FireKeepers Casino with having the “friendliest casino staff” in Michigan.

Smiling valets and congenial dealers welcome visitors to enjoy more than 2,680 slot machines, 90 table games, live poker, Bingo and an array of restaurants.

And even if gaming is not a priority, visitors will find plenty to keep them occupied in this high-energy venue, located right off busy I-94, halfway between Detroit and Chicago.

The Kabaret Lounge is a popular spot, with live bands, deejays, comedians and karaoke, as well as occasional “big-name” entertainers like the Black Crowes, “American Idol” Matt Giraud and comedian Kathy Griffin.

Since the casino is owned by the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi Indians — known as “Keepers of the Fire” — it’s not surprising to find a fire motif throughout, along with the elements of water, earth and air. And everyone loves the ceiling lights that flash to the rhythm of music.

A wall-length waterfall marks the entrance to Nibi, a romantic fine-dining spot done up in soothing shades of blue and green (the bone-in rib-eye for two is a favorite).

Chocolate fountains flow at Mijem Buffet, where the chocolate mousse cake and mocha cheesecake bring fans back for more. Dacey’s Sports Bar serves an impressive list of local microbrews, including some crafted by Battle Creek’s popular Arcadia Brewery.

Smart visitors sign up for the casino’s free Red Hot Rewards Club card for discounts on dining, retail and more. While FireKeepers does not have its own accommodations, there are plenty of local hotel and motel options. Or book a bed & breakfast or inn, like the charming National House Inn — Michigan’s oldest operating hotel — in historic Marshall, just six miles down the road.
