Tucked into the deep woods of northern Michigan near Roscommon, Forest Dunes Golf Club is an out-of-the-way retreat. The woodsy ambiance is so soothing — and the golf so incredible — that you’ll find it easy to escape from everything, including your cell phone, for a few days.

Designed by Tom Weiskopf, the course is regarded among the top two or three in a state known for dozens of championship links.

With five sets of tees stretching the layout to 7,141 yards, Forest Dunes cuts through acres of natural white sand, grassland and birch and pine trees in the Huron National Forest. The course is a challenge — and will confer lifetime bragging rights — for good golfers, yet is surprisingly friendly from the forward tees. Thanks to generous landing areas and grassy greenside bailouts, Forest Dunes is a great golf getaway for groups of friends, couples or outings.

Off the pristine course, golfers gather in the bar and restaurant of a soaring Adirondack-style clubhouse or retreat to a handful of rental homes either on the lake or in the piney woods. Other recreational options include kayaking, canoeing or a guided fishing tour on the Au Sable River, a favorite fly-fishing destination.

Forest Dunes offers a huge practice facility, a two-and-a-half acre putting course for warm-ups and a 19th hole with a mid-green bunker to settle bets. And its list of accolades is impressive, too, including: 45th on Golf Magazine’s “Top 100 Courses You Can Play,” 18th on Golf Digest’s list of America’s 100 greatest public courses and Golf World readers’ choice for top public course in 2009. Managed by Troon Golf, Forest Dunes also boasts Audubon International’s coveted Gold Signature Sanctuary certification.
