Play Ball!

Play Ball!

Detroit has a team in every major league, including baseball, so it’s fitting the Motor City would celebrate the turn of the 21st century by building an impressive baseball stadium for The Detroit Tigers — Comerica Park. True to the “Big D” style, this isn’t a little-league park by a long shot. Comerica Park is done right, and midway energy emanates from behind the bleachers.

In the evenings the action might be in the on-site bars before the game, but Sundays are all about families. Tickets start at $5, which gets you into the park two hours before the game. On Sundays, both the Tigers’ Carousel (big cats, not horses) and the medium-sized Ferris wheel are free to those under 14 years old. If you need to feed the little ones, consider making an exception to the healthy eating mandate. The Big Cat Court that circles the carousel is a junk food buffet of fries, ice cream, elephant ears, and Detroit Coney Dogs. Work off a few calories later on in the batting cage.

Make sure to bring your glove to catch stray balls during pre-game batting practice. The Kids Run the Bases event lets those under 14 live the dream of running a major league home run at the conclusion of the game, weather permitting. Then line up under the scoreboard in left field and have your cameras ready for a photo finish to the day.
