On the Boardwalk
Families, children and workers harmonize in a cacophonous jumble of sunburnt skin and ketchup spills at one of Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio’s most iconic pit stops, Eddie’s Grill and Dairy Queen. The open-air joint — with a walk-up hamburger counter and barstools so close to the sidewalk you might accidentally trip and find you’ve just ordered a sloppy joe — has catered to throngs of summer tourists for more than 50 years. Decorum is out the window, and old-fashioned boardwalk fun rules the long lazy days in this village on the Lake Erie shore.

The buildings may have seen better days, and the local wine may be a little sweet for some palates — but that’s all part of what makes this Ohio vacation spot so charming. It’s the perfect place for families to just relax and have fun.

Geneva-on-the-Lake’s walkable main strip offers a range of amusements from a simpler time: The Wild Water Works features two water slides stationed abruptly in the center of town, adjacent to Woody’s World Game Arcade. Just down the street is Adventure Zone, where you’ll find everything you need to amuse your kids — or feel like a kid again — including bumper boats, go-karts, adventure golf and batting cages.

Camp at Geneva State Park, or settle in at one of the shabby-chic cabins that dot the landscape. And if the screams of laughter emanating from your children get to be just a little too much, there’s always the centrally located Old Firehouse Winery to boost your spirits. Kick back on the spacious patio overlooking Lake Erie and contemplate how you grew up to be just like your parents. After all, reminiscing is natural in this little town that time forgot.
