Whether they live in a city or suburb or on a farm, many little girls dream of owning a horse with a silky mane and flying tail. That’s not always possible, of course, but a trip to BreyerFest in Lexington, Kentucky, is a nice compromise. BreyerFest, held July 15–17, is a festival for model horse collectors and horse lovers. The combined horse show, circus, county fair and shopping spree chose FairyTails as this year’s theme. Sponsored by Reeves International, makers of the famous Breyer model horses, the event is now in its 22nd year. It is as much a celebration of wholesome young American girls as it is horses.

Families meet live horses of almost every breed “up close and personal,” and Kathleen Fallon, BreyerFest spokesperson, says owners “love to hang out with their horses and talk to kids.” Visitors see horses that inspired Breyer models as well as “special guests,” including Daisy, the world’s “smartest” horse.

One-day or three-day tickets are available. Most events are inclusive with admission and include more than 40 equestrian acts performed in a covered arena, seminars, arts and crafts, pony rides, a petting zoo and swap meet. BreyerFest also features the world’s largest model horse show for children.

Three-day ticket holders get free admission to the Kentucky Horse Park’s International Museum of the Horse and American Saddle Horse Museum. The 1,200-acre Horse Park, which has been a horse farm since the 18th century, is open seven days a week, March 15–October 31; it is closed Monday and Tuesday in winter. If you can’t make BreyerFest, this is a great option any time for kids who would rather brush a mane than play video games.
