Lights, Camera, Horses!

Kentucky Horse Park
Fall/Winter 2009
Lights, Camera, Horses!
Kentucky certainly wouldn’t be the same without its horses, and Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky, gives children an excellent opportunity to get to know the magnificent creatures up close.

With more than 100 horses during the summer months and a few less during the winter season, it is impossible to go to this park and not interact with them. The Hall of Champions, housing legends such as Cigar, CH Gypsy Supreme, Kona Gold and Western Dreamer, is a favorite with children, as is the Parade of Breeds, which showcases 24 of the park’s different breeds of horses. Of course, don’t forget the pony and horse rides.

While the park is popular in the summer, it doesn’t slow down much for winter. “Southern Lights,” November 20–December 31, includes a four-mile drive through lighted, themed displays. They include both static and moving lights.

The light show has consistently been named among the Kentucky Tourism Council’s Winter Holiday Top 10 Festivals and Events and is on the Southeast Tourism Society’s list of top 20 events.

After the festive drive, visitors can warm up indoors and enjoy craft vendors, hot food, special displays in the park’s two museums and a variety of kid-friendly activities. Model train sets, a petting zoo and visits with Santa Claus will delight children and make the trip even more memorable.
