Into the Woods

Swoosh! Swoosh! It’s 15 degrees outside, but don’t be surprised if you work up a sweat. Cross-country skiing is exhilarating, and the snowy sylvan glade at Nub’s Nob Ski Resort in Harbor Springs, Michigan, is almost like a fairy tale. The meticulously groomed paths curve away from the busy downhill slopes, and in a matter of minutes, you’re transported into the woods.
The northwest corner of Michigan is home to shopping, restaurants and an array of outdoor sports. But unlike the region’s bigger ski destination, Boyne Mountain, Nub’s Nob is low key. There’s no hotel, no restaurant, just a cafeteria with the best chili and curly French fries you’ve ever tasted.
A family-friendly ski spot with 53 runs on three separate peaks, Nub’s is also home to miles of impeccable cross-country ski trails that rise over hills, wander through woods and trail across ravines. Snowshoers also find excellent trails across the winterscape.
Private lessons for children and adults are available, with instruction in everything from snowboarding and snowblading to Nordic skating.
Cresting over the ski slopes, the trails peer over Little Traverse Bay. There’s no sound except the swishing of skies, the thud of the snowshoes. You may find yourself feeling as if you’re in a snow-sport heaven.
