With more than 100 shops, restaurants and charming B&Bs in its historic downtown, Madison, Indiana, has got a weekend with the girls written all over it. Not only was it voted “The Prettiest Small Town in the Midwest” by Ladies Home Journal, but it also has the largest historic district in the Hoosier State, with over 133 blocks on the National Register of Historic Places.
Book rooms at one of nine B&Bs and let the innkeepers fuss over you. Several have two-night packages tailor-made for girlfriends, including Windy Hill’s alluring Women Unwound package, which includes a gift bag with fuzzy socks, bubble bath, a romance novel and an invitation to attend a dance class.
Take in some retail therapy in the downtown shopping district, scooping up vintage and antique gifts at Accents and Heirlooms, original art at the Artisans Gallery, treats for your dog or cat (or even your horse!) at Hoofs, Woofs and Whiskers, and fancy duds at Little People Boutique/Fine Threads.
Remember no girlfriends’ getaway is complete without chocolates (they’re gourmet, hand-dipped and oh-so-good at Cocoa Safari Chocolates) and ice cream (try “The ’37 Flood” at Mundt’s Candies, a giant sundae topped with everything but the kitchen sink). Indulge in both before gabbing with your gal pals at one of Madison’s fine dining spots.
