An isolated fire forced Indianapolis’ NCAA Hall of Champions to close its public exhibits in 2008. But the organization capitalized on its misfortune, using the opportunity to redesign its space in a way that will leave sports fans cheering.
After entering the NCAA Hall of Champions, with a colonnaded façade bearing the slightest resemblance to a Greek temple, visitors can view an introductory film inside the hall’s state-of-the-art, 1,000-square-foot theater. Video clips tell the story of the founding of the NCAA and the sports governed by the organization, while paying tribute to the drive and determination of student athletes. The Hall’s first floor also features the Arena, a showcase of all 23 NCAA sports, from football and basketball to fencing and bowling. A collection of photos, videos, equipment and jerseys bring each sport to life.
The upper level of the NCAA Hall of Champions, called Play, will likely become the center’s most popular attraction. Play’s interactive exhibits allow visitors a virtual taste of what student athletes experience first-hand in almost every NCAA sport. Simulation booths recreate the experiences of schussing downhill in collegiate ski competitions and receiving a powerful serve in a collegiate tennis match.
Other highlights at the NCAA Hall of Champions include the Hall of Honor, recognizing the accomplishments of elite student athletes; Member Showcases, highlighting schools that belong to the NCAA; and the Media Room, featuring high-energy video clips honoring some of college sports’ most memorable moments.
