A visit to the Peter J. McGovern Little League Museum in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, is sure to be a home run hit with your kids. The 23,000-square-foot museum, which opened in 1982, is named after the first president of Little League Baseball. It features two levels of exhibits, artifacts and interactive activities that educate visitors about Little League Baseball, which was founded in Williamsport in 1939 by Carl Stolz.

The first thing you’ll notice when entering the museum are the colorful flags hanging overhead, which represent the countries that participate in the Little League program. Kids are encouraged to run the bases on the replica infield below the flags.

The upper level focuses on the history of the game and on the equipment used. Also on the upper level is the Hall of Excellence, which highlights today’s leaders who learned life’s values through Little League. The Gallery of Achievement is dedicated to the volunteers who made the organization what it is today.

The lower level of the museum has hands-on activities, including a running track, batting cages and pitching mounds. Check your progress on the instant replay video monitors.

The premier event held at the museum complex is the annual Little League World Series in August. This year’s series begins on August 18 and ends with the championship game on August 25. All of the games are free and open to the public, but if you wish to sit in the grandstand during the final game, you must apply for a ticket through a ticket lottery.
