Whether it’s a laid-back vibe, easygoing locals or a leisurely pace, some destinations just scream “vacation.”

Any spot that’s christened Antique Alley certainly qualifies. The nickname, given to a 60-mile Indiana loop trail that stretches from Richmond to Centerville, Indiana, suggests a weekend of cruising with shopaholic friends. Rare furniture, handmade quilts, Depression glass — those who enjoy the thrill of a bargain hunt revel in the more than 1,200 antiques dealers in this aptly named region.

The heart of Antique Alley is Centerville, a town with an ambiance that’s just as attractive as its retail opportunities. Many downtown stores are located in 19th-century row houses with connecting archways, an architectural style that harks back to the height of the National Road era. It’s a reminder that Centerville’s Main Street is, in fact, part of the Historic National Road, once traversed by thousands of American pioneers as they ventured west in the 1800s. Inspired by that rich past, shoppers can peruse classic wares at the more than 550 antiques shops that call this town home, as well as at the Webb Antique Mall, the largest one of its kind in Indiana.

Visitors can continue to unearth hidden treasures at shops in nearby Richmond. While great finds are available year-round, the town’s Heartland Antiques Show, November 18, practically ensures that no group of traveling women leaves empty-handed.

Centerville’s historic Lantz House Inn & Gathering Place (conveniently located on Main Street) lets friends extend their shopping binge with an overnight stay, and pampers them with a “Just You and Your Friends” package. After hours of serious shopping, the package’s gift certificates for treatments at Canteberry Spa in Richmond are a welcome relief.
