You don’t have to be a high roller to enjoy a weekend getaway in downtown Detroit’s liveliest neighborhood.
The new Greektown Casino-Hotel opened its doors in mid-February and has been buzzing since, thanks to affordable rates, glitzy decor and a sizzling urban vibe. A 30-story tower of gleaming blue glass, the long-awaited hotel wows guests with an airy, multi-story lobby, dramatic purple and gold furnishings andhand-blown glass chandelier.
Four hundred contemporary rooms, including 29 suites, feature iPod docking stations, flat-screen televisions and other amenities. Suite dwellers may enjoy city views from whirlpool tubs. But with a fitness center, gambling and entertainment, guests probably won’t spend much time in their rooms.
Dining options include the “upscale casual” Bistro 555, the International Buffet, and the romantic Alley Grille Steakhouse, featuring live music and dishes like flaming cheese saganaki prepared tableside — and accompanied by the trademark Greektown shout, “Opa!”
Greektown Casino pulses with 2,600 slot and video poker machines, 80 table games, including blackjack, roulette and craps, and a new, high-limit poker room. Guests slip in and out of Eclipz, a cigar bar and martini lounge, or Shades, where mini-skirted “Go-Go girls” serve drinks such as “Chocolate Temptation” and “Millionaire Mojitos.”
And, whether using valet service or free garage parking, guests won’t need a car. The casino’s People Mover stop whisks riders to nearby sports venues or, for a breath of fresh air, the new Riverwalk Promenade.
