Exploration Vacation

Carnegie Science Center
Fall/Winter 2009
Exploration Vacation
Calling all future Einsteins. The Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, one of the nation’s premier science museums, is an inventive spot to have fun while molding a young mind. For a getaway that’s as exciting as it is educational, get to the Science Center stat — 2009 proves to be another great year for vacationing knowledge-seekers.

Must-see exhibits include the Miniature Railroad and Village, featuring hand-built replicas of Pennsylvania icons such as Punxsutawney Phil and Forbes Field, and the U.S.S. Requin submarine, the Navy’s first radar picket sub, which you and your family are welcome to board and explore. The sub, noteworthy for its many defense and scientific missions, boasts a one-of-a-kind living-history tour experience, immersing visitors in its fascinating story.

Foodies will want to check out the Kitchen Theater, featuring “science you can eat.” Learn about the science of food through live demonstrations, and explore not only why your favorite meal tastes delicious, but also the biology, chemistry and physics behind it.

At the Exploration Station, your little scientists can put everything they’ve learned to use. Children can launch rockets, play the laser harp, construct working electrical circuits and visit with interesting creatures like eastern box turtles and Madagascar hissing cockroaches.

When the sun sets, continue the science fun with a visit to the Henry Buhl, Jr., Observatory and see the Pittsburgh night sky like never before. The SkyWatch program will take you on a journey through space and back, so sit back, relax and enjoy the starry show.
