Dashing Through the Snow
Tracks to Trails Snowmobile Excursions
Fall/Winter 2010
What could be more exhilarating than traveling on a polar express through the deep gorges of the Agawa Canyon this winter? Perhaps only the fact that along the ride, you can unload your snowmobile and zip off through northern Ontario’s boreal forests.
That’s right. The Algoma Central Railway, which begins in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and continues 296 miles to the French Canadian town of Hearst, is a literal jumping off point for incredible sledding adventures.
Riders on the Algoma Central Railway’s “Tracks to Trails Snowmobile Excursions” can peel off at any of three junctures along the way. All of the towns along the line are snowmobiler havens with trailside fueling stations, easy park-and-eat establishments and ride-up accommodations. Sample excursions include loading your sled in Sault Ste. Marie, taking in the view as the train travels along Lake Superior to the first stopover in picturesque Wawa, riding on through the “hills from hell” to Dubreuilville nestled in the heart of the Magpie Forest and — if you are traveling in early February — enjoying the Hearst Winter Carnival.
If at any point you wear out, you can reboard the train to Sault Ste. Marie. Itineraries can be customized for one-day to weeklong adventures and you can go it alone or with a guide. Two tour guides recommended by the Algoma Central Railway are Algoma Sled Tours and Northern Guided Tours. Ready to try it? Baggage space must be reserved in advance by contacting Algoma Central Railway.
