Big-Screen Party

Movies Under the Stars at the Wex
Spring/Summer 2010
Big-Screen Party

View a classic movie while partying with several hundred other filmgoers this summer. The Wexner Center for the Arts will host three big-screen movies under the stars on The Ohio State University campus in Columbus — June 17, July 15 and August 19. These free family-friendly movies begin at dusk, around 9 p.m., along with some vintage trailers that relate to the evening’s movie theme. Although this year’s titles have not yet been confirmed, last summer’s lineup featured such classics as “American Graffiti” and “The Wolf Man” from 1941. Don’t miss free ice cream from Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, free popcorn from Pam’s Popcorn and a cash bar with beer and soda.

Expect a festival-like atmosphere that begins when folks arrive with their blankets and chairs around 8:15 p.m. Last summer a disc jockey warmed up the crowd at the first movie with some soul and R&B. And because it’s a college campus, plenty of students and campus activity add to the energy and buzz. This is as close as you can get to an authentic drive-in experience, with folks sprawled on the grass, the concrete plaza and the ledges along the Wexner Center entrance. Only the cars are missing.

Parking is available just steps away at the Ohio Union Garage or in the Arps Garage to the north. Or, park at the Gateway Garage, grab a bite to eat at one of the dining spots at South Campus Gateway and then walk along High Street to the movie. If it rains, the movie is shown indoors at the Wexner Theater.
