Casino Rama’s name is a bit misleading. After all, with visitors to the gambling mecca in Rama, Ontario, able to check into a 300-room all-suite hotel, dine in any of 10 restaurants, indulge in spa treatments and shop at a Native-American art gallery, this destination is much more than a mere gaming spot.
Casino Rama’s luxurious, log-home decor and faux-rock walls — as well as the hotel’s blend of wood, granite, copper and water accents — aim to reflect the picturesque landscape outside. (A two-hour drive north of Toronto, Casino Rama sits on the cusp of Ontario’s cottage country.)
As the province’s only First Nations commercial casino, it also incorporates the rich culture of the Rama people. Fire is an important symbol, so at the center of the box-office lobby is an artistic representation of a fire pit that presents a multimedia show educating visitors about Rama traditions. Flames also burn at the cozy Firestarter Lounge, where guests can sip cocktails and nibble on bruschetta with feta on toasted European baguettes, all while relaxing near the lounge’s grand piano and three stone fireplaces. As for the fireplaces featured in the living area of all the suites — just consider them an elegant, cozy touch.
Heading for the more than 90,000 square feet of gaming is always an entertaining option at Casino Rama. The 2,500 slot machines, 110 gaming tables and a 10-table poker room where guests play against each other (not the house) provide a lively atmosphere. Meanwhile, live shows abound for those who’d rather avoid the gaming.
The 5,000-seat Entertainment Centre is a sure bet with its impressive and diverse line-up, including jaw-dropping stunts performed by The Imperial Circus of China, September 13–17; the classic songs of Burt Bacharach, October 2; the magic of David Copperfield, October 8–10; and the comedy of Bill Cosby, October 16 and 17.
