What may be the world’s largest collection of handmade scarecrows greets kids of all ages at the 26th annual St. Charles Scarecrow Fest, held October 7–9.

Nearly 120,000 people are expected to attend the outdoor festival, when fall’s rich colors only add to the charm of downtown St. Charles, located just an hour west of Chicago.

More than 100 scarecrows — created by artists, community organizations and local businesses and showcasing a variety of styles — will be on display throughout Lincoln Park and the town. The most elaborate have moving parts and sound effects, while simpler creations will still have the opportunity to win prizes.

Many, but not all, of the scarecrows are Halloween-themed. In addition to the ghouls and goblins, scarecrows replicate everyone from fairy-tale characters to movie idols.

“The heart and soul of the festival is the scarecrow contest,” says Jenny O’Brien of the St. Charles Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Some visitors come every year, and now their kids are bringing their own children.”

New to the festival this year is St. Charles Restaurant Row, where local eateries will offer some of their signature dishes. Additional activities include a children’s scarecrow-making workshop, a local talent showcase, a canine corner with dachshund races and puppy costumes and a craft show. Best of all, all events are free.

Free shuttle transportation is available for rides between parking lots and the park, and local hotels will offer special Scarecrow Fest packages.
