A Little Luck

A Little Luck

“It’s kind of like a wishing well,” says concierge Melissa Pomranky of the river that runs through the stunning indoor garden at Little River Casino Resort in Manistee, Michigan. And it’s the perfect place to wish for some good luck.

Once you’ve admired the splashing waterfall, wooden bridge and beautiful plants and trees — even prettier at night when the domed ceiling glows from a changing rainbow of colored lights — it’s time to hit the casino floor, where you’ll find nearly 1,500 slot machines, about 30 gaming tables, a bingo parlor and the high-roller room.

Run by the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians in Manistee, a Victorian port city near Lake Michigan, the casino offers 24/7 gaming, giving visitors a variety of entertainment options. And the sprawling North Woods-style resort features a 292-room hotel and a seasonal 95-space RV park, April through October. Guests have access to a fitness center, sauna and hot tub. Some like to gather around the stone fireplace in the hotel lobby or gaze at the giant freshwater fish tank in the main bar. There’s also a small museum outside the gift shop that showcases Native American items, including a canoe.

As for dining, The Willows serves tasty buffets, from breakfast spreads to all-you-can-eat prime rib and seafood, while The Heron at the River offers made-to-order burgers and steaks. Regional musicians, tribute bands, polka events and big-name entertainers like Howie Mandel and Bobby Vinton draw crowds to The Grove, the resort’s concert venue.

Little River draws repeat visitors with affordable room rates. And smart players sign up for the free Player’s Club Card, which offers extra perks.
